Wassily Kandinsky One of the founding fathers of abstract painting and regarded as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, Kandinsky was born in Moscow, Russia. He studied at the University of Moscow and after completing his studies in law, became a lecturer there.

Kandinsky became one of the leaders in the expressionist group know as the ''Blue Rider Movement'' and became a vital figure in the development of German expressionism.

During the last decade of his life, Kandinsky blended the free, intuitive images of his earlier years with the geometric forms of his later, Bauhaus period. He died in Paris at the age of 78.
